Car break-in charges filed

Police seize items at home

A self-described "pot head" admitted to another habit, state police said.

Adam Paul Harris, 28, of Connoquenessing Township allegedly became addicted to "car shopping," street parlance for looking for unlocked vehicles to loot for money and property.

And, according to court documents, he turned his "shopping" into a lucrative hobby in just a short time.

Police on Thursday filed 250 or so additional counts against Harris, stemming from a flurry of recent vehicle break-ins that plagued several municipalities including Donegal, Oakland and Summit townships.

Last week, police filed charges in just one vehicle break-in, after arresting the defendant in connection with a traffic stop for suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana.

That stop on May 8, documents said, led investigators to confirm what they had come to suspect, that Harris was behind the string of thefts.

While speaking to a trooper, he admitted to being a "pot head," documents said.

A search of his pickup truck yielded drug-related contraband and other suspicious evidence, police said, including a flashlight, backpacks and a latex glove.

A subsequent search of his home turned up $20,000 and $25,000 worth of stolen property. His confession, a police affidavit said, would follow.

"Harris related that he had been stealing from cars over the last couple of months," the affidavit said. "He indicated that he would often drop (his girlfriend) off at work and then drive around 'looking at the roads.'"

The defendant's girlfriend works at the Chicora Medical Center off Route 68 in Donegal Township, authorities said.

Police noted that many of the vehicle break-ins occurred along the defendant's route to and from the medical center.

"(Harris) said that when he found a likely spot," documents said, "he would park his truck and walking along the roads trying doors.

Police said he looked for, among other items, guns, global positioning system units, laptop computers and money.

About 200 stolen items from more than five dozen vehicles were seized from his home, investigators said.

A police inventory showed the recovered items included 11 stereo/compact disc players or radios, six GPS units, five iPods, four cell phones, four digital cameras, two rifles, a shotgun and a pistol.

Among the more unusual items seized was a $250 pink prom dress and curling iron taken from a vehicle in Center Township.

Harris is in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 cash-only bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at District Judge Lewis Stoughton's office in Chicora.
