James E. Hawkey, II-VI co-founder

James E. Hawkey, 72, of Butler died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.

Born June 23, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Harry C. and Laura L. Drew Hawkey.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

After establishing himself as a crystal grower at Carnegie Tech University and Crysteco in Ohio, Jim co-founded II-VI Inc. in Saxonburg in 1971 and left in 1986 to found the Keystone Crystal Corp., which is located in Jefferson Township, with his son, Carl, in 1988.

He was a Jefferson Township supervisor from 1978 to 1983. He was a member of the American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and the Electro Chemical Society and a lifetime member of the NRA and the American Association of Crystal Growers. He enjoyed genealogy, researching his Scottish heritage, and he was a gentleman farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Caroline Traficante Hawkey, who he married May 31, 1958; his son, Carl Richard Hawkey and his wife, Gay, of Butler; his daughters, Martina Mancuso and her husband, Anthony, of Blairsville and Lisa M. Hawkey of Tuscon, Ariz.; his brother, Harry Hawkey of Tulsa, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Carolyn Rorer; and a brother, Richard E. Hawkey.

<B>HAWKEY</B> — Friends of James E. Hawkey, who died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at <B>Fox Funeral Home Inc.</B>, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg.
