Iola Martin McClelland

Iola Martin McClelland, 89, of Lawrenceville, Ga., passed away peacefully Monday at her home with her children and friends by her side.

Born Oct. 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. Martin and Martha Shearer Martin of Cabot. She was the youngest of 10 children.

Iola was a longtime active member of the First United Church of Lawrenceville, having served on numerous committees of the church through the years and loved her participation in the Joy Sunday School Class and the Mary Martha Circle.

She is survived by her son, Leroy McClelland of Winder, Ga.; her daughter, Marilyn McClelland of Lawrenceville; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She married A. Glenn McClelland in 1948, and they shared 44 wonderful years together until his death in June 1992. She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur Martin, Clarence Elmer Martin, John Franklin Martin, Charles Everett Martin and James Leroy Martin; and sisters, Cleora Leslie Isabelle Martin Shick, Lillian Irene Martin Murphy, Grace Juanita Martin and Bernice Beatrice Martin.

She was a stay-at-home mother until the 1960s when she went to work for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare (H.E.W.), now known as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She retired in 1983 after 20 years.

Upon retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends, was an active member of the Dogwood Garden Club, served on various local and regional committees, and was an active member of the local chapter of AARP.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

<B>McCLELLAND</B> — The family of Iola Martin McClelland, who died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>Tom M. Wage's Funeral home</B>, Lawrenceville Chapel, 120 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville, Ga. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville with Dr. Davis Chappell officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park.Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.wagesfuneralhome.com.
