Fake designer purses land 2 NY men in jail
CENTER TWP — A pair of New York City men remain jailed after authorities Sunday seized hundreds of counterfeit purses, wallets and other items from a popular Route 8 flea market, state police said.
Xizhi Cai, 36, and Jiandong Chen, 27, both of Queens, are accused of selling the items at the Clearview Flea Market.
The China natives are charged with trademark counterfeiting, a felony. They are in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail each.
A North Carolina-based detective agency that represents different trademarks such as Coach, Chanel, and Dooney and Bourke assisted the state police Organized Crime Task Force in the investigation.
Investigators about 11 a.m. Sunday, according to court documents, watched the men sell 27 suspected counterfeit designer merchandise, mainly purses, for $400.
Nearby and hanging on racks were other purses, handbags, wallets and jewelry. In all, police counted 494 pieces of fake designer merchandise.
Chen, a police affidavit said, later acknowledged he acquired the items in New York's Chinatown. He allegedly admitted that he knew the merchandise was counterfeit.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned the defendants. Chen told Stoughton he was self-employed and has lived in the United States for 15 years. Cai said he has been in the U.S. for 23 years. He claimed to work for an unknown company in New York.
Preliminary hearings for the two men are 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22.
