Golf Digest estimates the odds against a golfer having two holes-in-one in the same round at 67 million to 1.But just last week, former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Steve Blass made two holes-in-one in a span of 11 holes during the team's annual alumni golf outing.Day shot her first ace on the 149-yard third hole on Sept. 9. She added the second on the 161-yard 13th.
NEW YORK — The NBA will hold training camp next week with replacement officials, saying Friday the referees union has rejected its final contract offer.The National Basketball Referees Association has been bracing for a lockout since talks first broke down last week, and lead negotiator Lamell McMorris called it "imminent and unavoidable" after no deal was reached.A statement from the NBA made it clear the lockout was under way.
SAN DIEGO — Jiyai Shin of South Korea shot a 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead over No. 1-ranked Lorena Ochoa and Ai Miyazato Friday in the second round of the Samsung World Championship at Torrey Pines.Shin, who was tied for the lead after the opening round, has a 36-hole total of 135 atop the elite field of 20. LOUDON, N.H. — Mark Martin signed a contract extension to run a full schedule with Hendrick Motorsports through 2011.It's been a resurgent year for 50-year-old Martin, who originally was going to drive just one full season for Hendrick. WASHINGTON — Air Canada and U.S. transportation officials said Friday they reached a deal to allow the airline to fly National Hockey League teams within the U.S., averting the possible last-minute cancellation of flights that could have affected the NHL schedule.U.S. law prohibits a foreign airline from flying passengers solely between U.S. cities. The deal lets Air Canada fly between U.S. cities as long as it also flies those passengers in and out of the U.S.The conflict had threatened to disrupt the travel schedules of NHL teams for the upcoming hockey season, which begins Oct. 1. Canada has NHL teams in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
