IN BRIEF

PITTSBURGH — The agent for Steelers kicker Jeff Reed has denied his client tried to fight with police outside a Pittsburgh bar on Sunday, but is not commenting further on the incident.

Atlanta-based agent Don Henderson told Pittsburgh media outlets Monday that Reed never fought with police outside McFadden's Bar about 9 p.m. Sunday. Reed kicked two field goals in the team's 27-14 over the Cleveland Browns a few hours earlier.

Police say Reed took a "fighting stance" when officers arrived to cite teammate Matt Spaeth for allegedly urinating in public and became unruly when police tried to restrain him.

Henderson denied that Monday, but now is declining to elaborate.

Reed is charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

PITTSBURGH — Penguins forward Max Talbot has practiced with his teammates for the first time since scoring both of their goals in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.Talbot, who had surgery in July to repair a torn labrum in left shoulder, wore a red jersey that signified he could not be involved in contact during Monday's practice. While Talbot is skating and working on his shooting, he is not expected to play for at least another month to six weeks. After the surgery, doctors told him that returning in four months would be risky and that it would be safer to wait for five months — or sometime in early December.

STORRS, Conn. — As the University of Connecticut football team prepares to take the practice field for the first time since its starting cornerback was killed, police still haven't said who they think fatally stabbed him during a fight outside a school dance over the weekend. The Huskies will resume practicing today, two days after 20-year-old Jasper Howard's death, said coach Randy Edsall.Meanwhile, an attorney for a Bloomfield, Conn., man said Monday he expected his client to be arrested in the stabbing death, as police continued to sort out what happened. The attorney, Deron Freeman, declined to identify his client but said the man and several others got into a fight "with about six" UConn football players early Sunday. Freeman said his client did not stab Howard but was present when Howard was mortally wounded.
