CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Prospect League, a summer collegiate baseball circuit that includes the Butler BlueSox and Slippery Rock Sliders, is expanding from 11 to 14 teams for the 2010 season.

The DeKalb County (Ill.) Liners, Terre Haute (Ind.) Rex and West Virginia Miners have been added to the league, The Miners will play in Beckley, W.Va.

WRENSHALL, Minn. — A Minnesota high school girls basketball team was shut out 65-0 this week.Wrenshall coach Michelle Blanchard said the "shots just weren't going in" Thursday for her young, inexperienced team that is 0-5 this season.Moose Lake-Willow River beat Wrenshall easily and coach Andrew Miller said he played his junior varsity players for nearly all the second half after leading 40-0 at halftime.

GROVE CITY — Grove City College received the Presidents' Athletic Conference Team Sportsmanship Award for football, men's and women's soccer in 2009.Grove City has received eight such awards to date, five more than any other team in the league.

GROVE CITY — Grove City College senior defensive tackle Tony Clark earned second-team All-South Region honors from D3Football.com.Clark recorded 61 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss this season.

AKRON, Ohio — Police in Ohio say the mother of Pittsburgh Steelers star James Harrison has been charged with assault following a brawl at a game-watching party in a community hall.Akron police say 62-year-old Mildred Harrison was one of three people cited after the fight at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post Thursday.Police say it's not clear why the party turned violent about 10 p.m., during Cleveland's 13-6 upset of division foe Pittsburgh.Victims have told police they were pushed, punched and struck with beer bottles.Harrison is due in Akron Municipal Court Thursday. She declined to comment to the Akron Beacon-Journal when reached by telephone at her Akron home Friday.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois fired almost half of Ron Zook's staff Friday but said the fifth-year head coach will keep his job despite a 3-9 season — the second-straight losing year for the Illini.First-year offensive coordinator Mike Schultz, quarterbacks coach Kurt Beathard and receivers coach Jim Pry were all fired, as was special teams coach Mike Woodford.

WASHINGTON — Ivan Rodriguez signed a $6 million, two-year deal with the Washington Nationals after passing a physical.The 38-year-old catcher said he wants to be an everyday player. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo, however, wants Rodriguez to split time with Jesus Flores, who is recovering from shoulder surgery and is supposed to be ready for spring training.Rodriguez is a 14-time All-Star and a 13-time Gold Glove winner. The Nationals are hoping he can help groom Flores, mentor young pitchers and provide leadership for a team that lost more than 100 games each of the past two seasons.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jason Kendall agreed Friday to a $6 million, two-year contract with the Kansas City Royals and is expected to become their everyday catcher.The former Pittsburgh Pirate is a .290 hitter over his 14-year career. The 35-year-old was an All-Star in 1996, 1998 and 2000 but hit just .241 with two homers and 43 RBI last season with Milwaukee.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kyle Busch is entering team ownership with two entries next season in NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series.Kyle Busch Motorsports will field the No. 18 Toyota and drive it himself in companion races to the Sprint Cup Series. Brian Ickler will drive the truck when Busch has other obligations.Tyler Malsam will run the full season in the second entry, the No. 56 Toyota.

PHOENIX — The Ice Edge Holdings investment group signed a letter of intent to buy the financially floundering Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL with a long-term commitment to keep the team in Arizona.NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Friday much remains to be done before the sale closes but the league pledged to work closely with Ice Edge "to bring the sale to conclusion as expeditiously as possible."Ice Edge chief executive officer Anthony LeBlanc said "Ice Edge has committed to keep the Coyotes in Glendale for the remaining term of the original lease."
