Mabel Eleanor Gardner Uber, 96, of Slippery Rock died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009.

Born in Grove City on Nov. 9, 1913, she taught elementary school in Grove City before marrying Elton N. Uber of Slippery Rock in 1938.

She was active in the Slippery Rock community, serving on the Slippery Rock School Board, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard and in various positions at the Center Presbyterian Church.

She also worked with her husband at the Uber & Son Furniture Store and Funeral Home. She loved playing bridge and greatly enjoyed fellowship with the Monday Prayer Group.

Surviving are her children, Eleanor (James) McConnell of Williamsville, N.Y.; Edward (Pamela) Uber of Slippery Rock; and John (LaVada) Uber of Ovieda, Fla.; a son-in-law, Alvin Bengtson of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elton North Uber, on Nov. 22, 1984; a daughter, Virginia Lee Bengtson, Nov. 4, 2009; and three sisters, Lois Heckman, Margaret Smith and Mary Grace Canon.

<B>UBER —</B> Family will receive friends of Mabel Eleanor Gardner Uber from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to the time of service at 11 a.m. Monday at the <B>SMITH FUNERAL HOME,</B> 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. There will be a public memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Mumaw, II, pastor of Center Presbyterian Church officiating. Private burial will occur before the memorial service at 9 a.m. Monday at the Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be sent to the Center Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard, or Grove City Meals on Wheels.
