Meadville man accused in string of bank robberies
ERIE — The FBI alleges Jeffrey Kent Witscher robbed four banks in two months, including one in Grove City. The suspect netted about $9,000 total.
Witscher, 45, of Meadville was charged Dec. 31 by the FBI in Erie with the robberies. The charges came one day after a robbery of the First United National Bank in Franklin.
The first robbery was the Grove City one, according to federal court documents, and the suspect left without the money.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said about 2:44 p.m. Nov. 20, a white man entered the Farmer's National Bank, approached the teller and displayed a note written on the inside of checkbook saying "This is a holdup. Give me all your money, no singles." The man had his left hand in his coat pocket, leading the teller to believe he had a gun.
After reading the note, the teller asked "Are you serious?" according to documents. The man then asked her "Can't you read?" She told him no.
The man then left the bank, without money but with the note.
Even though no money was handed over, Witscher is still charged with that robbery.
The FBI said the failed attempt didn't deter Witscher. Just five days later, a man walked into a Millcreek Township bank in Erie County and gave a teller a note demanding money and indicating he had a weapon. The teller told investigators she saw a small handgun in the robber's waistband.
In this instance, the man got away with $5,480, according to documents.
Then on Dec. 8, police were called to a PNC Bank in Waterford, Erie County, after a man showed a teller a note in a checkbook demanding money and indicating he had a weapon. After the teller handed over about $3,300, the suspect left the bank.
Finally, according to the FBI, a man tried to rob the First United National Bank in Franklin on Dec. 30. When, after reading a note from the suspect, the teller refused to give the man any money, the suspect left the bank. He was trailed by a bank employee.
Franklin police heard a man shouting and saw a different man running. An officer radioed the location of the suspect to other officers, who soon caught the suspect with a note in a checkbook.
When investigators questioned Witscher, he admitted he had robbed the banks in Grove City, Millcreek Township, Waterford and Franklin, according to court documents.
Court records indicate Witscher is in federal custody and he had been appointed a public attorney.
