Greenawalt

Naomi Carol Greenawalt, 73, of Preston Drive went to be with her Lord peacefully at 8:54 p.m. Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 29, 1936, in Valencia, she was the daughter of the late Leland Oesterling and Marcella Grabe Oesterling.

Lovingly known as "The Hat Lady," Carol wore a butterfly on her clothing every day except during the six weeks of Lent, as a symbol of the Resurrection.

Carol married Donald Greenawalt on May 26, 1954, and followed him shortly thereafter as he was sent to France as he served in the United States Air Force.

Carol was a homemaker and a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Cabot.

Carol came from a very musical family, sang with her sisters and played drums with the family band. At the age of 3, she won a singing contest on WISR Radio by singing "Who's Afraid of the Boogie Man" for Bob Kaufman.

For most of her life, Carol was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church where she sang in the Senior Choir, was a leader for the children's Sunday school openings, and created many large banners that hung in front of the sanctuary. She was a member of the Tuesday Musical Club and the Christian Women organizations.

She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Children's Rehabilitation Center, St. Anthony's School for Exceptional Children in Oakmont and lead singalongs for the MORA Club, the Tanglewood Senior Center and other organizations for many years.

At St. Luke, she sang in the choir, was the wedding coordinator and for many years added the graphics and copied the church bulletins.

Carol wrote music and poetry and arranged much of the music for the Grace Notes, a gospel trio that she preformed with from 1972 until 2008.

She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Greenawalt; a daughter, Debra Greenawalt; a son, Timothy Greenawalt and his wife, Mary, and two grandchildren, Dustin and Kayla, all of Butler; five sisters, Janice Fry and her husband, Kenneth, of Butler, Evelyn Cypher and her husband, Wayne, of Butler, Eleanor England of Orlando, Fla., Kay Kuhn and her husband, George, of Howell, Mich., and Karen Mulligan of New Jersey; three brothers, William Oesterling and his wife, Cathy, of Trenton, Mo., Charles Oesterling and his wife, Marty, of Butler and Ronald Oesterling of Lansing, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Nicklas and her husband, Bud Funkhouser, of Butler and Edith Oesterling of Port Ritchey, Fla.; her mother-in-law, Bessie M. Greenawalt of Butler; 28 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Lee Greenawalt; a brother, Keith L. Oesterling; and two sisters, Doris M. Oesterling and Leah J. Montag.

<B>GREENAWALT</B> — Friends and family of Naomi Carol Greenawalt, who died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 330 Hannahstown Road, Cabot, with Pastor Barry Keurulainen and Pastor Jason Hoerth of St. Luke Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Brownsdale Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family of Carol Greenawalt wishes donations be made to St. Luke Lutheran Church, 330 Hannahstown Road, Cabot, PA 16023, or Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia, 613 N.
