Snow not realtor's task

I feel obligated to respond to the Jan. 21 Butler Eagle editorial, "City should better enforce rules for winter sidewalk maintenance."

The property that was the subject of the editorial — the sidewalks fronting the former Hot Dog Shop and Rite Aid at the corner of South Main and East Jefferson streets — is listed with my real estate company. However, the property is not owned by the listing office, nor is the listing office legally responsible for maintaining the property.

Out of courtesy, after speaking with the city police officer, I made a concerted effort to have the necessary snow removal done even though the responsibility was not mine, since I have not been the property manager of this property for almost two years.

As a Butler business owner and realtor for more than 50 years, I wish the same courtesy extended to the police to respond would have been extended to me, to learn the facts from my perspective.

I believe, as members of the community and good citizens, we accomplish the most by extending one another common courtesies and keeping open the lines of communication.
