Frederick Meier, former Slippery Rock hardware store owner

Meier

Frederick Meier, 86, of West Park Road, Slippery Rock, Worth Township, died at 5:45 a.m. Thursday at the Orchard Manor Nursing Home in Grove City following a brief stay at the nursing home.

Born in Euclid, March 11, 1923, he was the son of Emil Ernest Meier and Annie Katherine Wetzel.

He married Reba Jean Rodgers Meier on Sept. 10, 1946. She died March 21, 2006.

He was a member of the Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church, Worth Township.

Mr. Meier owned and operated Fred Meier Hardware in Slippery Rock from 1947 to 1985. Following his retirement from the hardware store, he worked for Butler County Ford for 12 years as a car salesman.

On Jan. 29, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II as a member of the Co. G. 513th Regiment paratroopers. He was honorably discharged Aug. 24, 1945.

Mr. Meier was a member and past commander of the Frank P. Cheesman American Legion Post 393 of Slippery Rock. He was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle and the Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh. He was a life member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association and a former member of the Slippery Rock Sportsman's Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Deborah Kay) Pagano of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Mark (Shirlann M.) Finch of Slippery Rock; a brother, Harry James Meier of Harrisville; four grandchildren, Gina Cirrito, Andrea Pagano, Megan Finch and Kevin Finch; and a great-grandson, Ethan Michael Cirrito.

<B>MEIER</B> — Visitation for Frederick Meier, who died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Frailey of Wolf Creek Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Wolf Creek Cemetery, Worth Township.
