Frederick "Fud" Polanec Jr. of Lyndora retired Feb. 1 from the U.S. Navy after 27 years of faithful and honorable service.A 1982 graduate of Butler High School, he initially served as an enlisted communications specialist reaching chief petty officer and was selected into the Naval Officer Corps attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.Stationed at the U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Neb., he was deputy chief for intelligence and surveillance and recently was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.His diverse career served airborne, maritime, submarine and special operations missions and was highlighted by delivering the communications package to Air Force One during the tragic events of 911. He is the recipient of several campaign, service and personal awards.He recently accepted a position with the Department of Defense as chief, future satellite architecture for the Air Force.He is married to the former Denise Pavlek, a 1983 graduate of Butler.———Marine Corps Reserve Pvt.
Lloyd Harter, son of Ronnie Harter of Lyndora, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
