J. Paul Owens

J. Paul Owens, 80, of Thornwood Drive, Butler, died at 11:50 a.m. Monday in Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1929, in Westminster, Md., he was the son of J. Paul Owens and Blanche Aldrich Owens.

Mr. Owens graduated from the School of Forestry at Syracuse University.

He was a member of the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps during the Korean War, serving in the United States and in Korea.

Mr. Owens was the regional underwriting manager at Nationwide Insurance in Butler, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Butler, having served as a lay reader and an usher.

Mr. Owens is survived by his wife, Mary Haynes Owens, who he married Aug. 21, 1955; a son, Joseph, at home; two daughters, Sarah and her husband, Robert Barry, Jones of Media, Pa., and Elizabeth and her husband, Elliott Alan, Hannum Jr. of Richboro, Pa.; two grandchildren, Jack Hannum and Meghan Hannum; one brother, David and his wife, Charlotte, Owens of Staughton, Va.; and one sister, Dorothy and her husband, Roland, English of Catonsville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Owens was preceded in death by one sister, Lucy Davis, and one brother, John Owens.

<B>OWENS </B>— At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. A memorial service for J. Paul Owens, who died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. Paul Cooper officiating.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Butler Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001; Meals on Wheels-Butler, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001; or St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, and information and a private guest book are available at www.thompson-miller.com.
