Butler trio shines at state meet
STATE COLLEGE — The awe of competing at Penn State University's indoor track facility didn't get to the Butler trio of Paige Rittelmann, Evan Gomez or Briana Lumley.
Instead, it brought out their best.
All three Butler athletes placed at the Pennsylvania Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday.
Rittelmann, a sophomore, placed third in the high jump, Gomez, a junior, finished sixth in the 800-meter run and Lumley, a senior, came in seventh in the shot put.
"Just walking into that facility leaves you in awe," said Butler coach Rick Schontz. "The meet was run very quickly, but they all were relaxed and performed well. It was a heck of an accomplishment."
Gomez and Lumley did so well that they broke Butler indoor track and field records in the process.
Gomez set the school standard in the 800 with a time of 1 minutes, 56.6 seconds. His effort was nearly four seconds faster than his previous best time.
Lumley also broke a school indoor record in the shot with a throw of 41 feet. The heave was nearly two feet farther than her previous best.
"I think the stage got them fired up for the performance," Schontz said. "Other than Paige, the thinking was we'd be happy with a good performance from them. If you would have told them before the meet that they would have had that time and that distance, I think they would have been pretty satisfied."
They were.
So was Rittelmann, who cleared 5-4 for her third-place finish.
But for Lumley, the achievement may set the stage for her outdoor season.
"(Lumley) is sure of herself," Schontz said. "She's very dedicated and each year she's gotten stronger and stronger. She deserved to do that well."
Now the bar will be raised even higher for the trio when the outdoor season begins in a few weeks.
That's part of what the indoor season is all abou, Schontz said.
"What it does is set a new level of expectations," he said. "It just shows how good they can be."
