Middlesex ponders utility system maps
MIDDLESEX TWP — The township supervisors are considering a graphical information system that would allow officials to quickly access information on several different township features.
The supervisors Wednesday night said the system would consist of a topographical map of the township on which specialized computer software could layer separate township systems.
Public sewer lines, including the location of main lines, manholes, connections and valves, could be layered on the map. Volunteer firefighters could quickly locate fire hydrants and valves.
Lot lines and zoning areas, flood plains, housing developments, agricultural security areas, streams and rivers, and properties with gas or oil leases could all be separate components on the GIS map.
All, some or just one of the components could be laid on the topographical map at a time. An outside company would create the system, and Middlesex officials could access it online.
Township manager Scot Fodi said Cranberry Township residents can view their municipality's GIS map on the township Web site.
Supervisors chairman Mark Vincent said Zelienople officials, who also have this system, have offered to guide Middlesex through the process of this mapping.
Fodi said he would contact Zelienople borough manager Don Pepe regarding the project.
Cost for the project is unknown because it is in such an early phase.
