5 inmates charged in Butler prison disturbances
Five inmates at the Butler County Prison have been charged in a jail disturbance last month that injured two of the prisoners, authorities said.
The entire melee was caught on surveillance video, said Butler County Detective Pat Cannon, which played a key role in identifying the suspects.
Cannon, meanwhile, praised prisoner officers for preventing the April 21 fracas from escalating into a larger uprising.
The altercation apparently began over a cigarette lighter, which inmates are not to have in the jail, that was borrowed by one of the prisoners and not returned to its owner.
Sonny S. Coulter, 39, of Cherry Township and
Alfred Hines-Cox, 27, of Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, squared off in a fight in the prison's recreation area, according to court documents. After several punches were thrown, Hines-Cox got Coulter in a choke hold, rendering Coulter unconscious. That beating sparked at least one other fight between inmates.During the ensuing melee, authorities said, Joseph M. Parker, 19, of Etna, Allegheny County and Tywann Windham, 25, of Butler simultaneously sucker punched inmate Robert Duffield of Petrolia in the head and face.Cannon said the blows knocked the back of Duffield's head against a door, after which the 27-year-old inmate fell to the floor, possibly already unconscious.Meanwhile, Michael Zeigler, 27, of Harmony was among those inmates in the day area trying to get into the recreation area. He yelled racial epithets during the melee, Cannon said.Preliminary hearings for Hines-Cox, Parker and Coulter in connection with the prison melee are set for May 17 before District Judge Pete Shaffer; hearings for Windham and Zeigler are scheduled for May 24.
