Trial starts for doctor accused of fondling boys

The trial for a doctor accused of fondling two boys at a home for delinquent youth got started today.

Dr. David Evanko, 56, of Butler Township is accused of inappropriately touching two boys from Summit Academy in 2008 and 2009.

Attorneys today worked through a pool of 100 people to seat 16 jurors to hear the case. They began in the morning interviewing potential jurors and continued late into the afternoon.

Evanko is charged with institutional sexual assault, indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors and child endangerment. Prosecutors from the state attorney general's office allege Evanko fondled the boys on the premise while providing medical treatment for genital warts.

Clarion County Judge Charles Alexander is overseeing the trial because Butler County judges recused themselves. Likewise, Butler County prosecutors turned over the case to the state because of a conflict of interest.

In a separate case, Evanko is accused of assaulting a boy he encountered in the mid-1990s through the Boy Scouts. However, that trial has been postponed while prosecutors appeal a pretrial decision.

There also are civil lawsuits pending in the case of the Summit Township children.

Once the 16 jurors, which includes four alternates, are seated, attorneys are expected to immediately begin with opening arguments. The trial is expected to last the week.
