Fugitive nabbed in burning bust
BUTLER TWP — A suspected case of illegal burning Sunday night proved to be a bigger bust for police, authorities said.
It turned out Florida authorities were looking for the same suspect, 33-year-old Stevie L. Stone of Lyndora, in connection with a burglary case there, according to court documents.
Stone now finds himself in the Butler County Prison pending extradition proceedings that could send him back soon to Florida. He is jailed on $250,000 bail.
Township police about 8:25 p.m. caught Stone burning rubbish at his home on Bessemer Avenue in violation of a township ordinance.
When the officer checked the National Crime Information Center's database, he found there was a warrant for Stone's arrest.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office in Florida wanted Stone for a 2007 burglary, documents said. Police notified Florida authorities, who indicated they plan to seek his extradition.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Stone on a charge of being a fugitive from justice.
At his arraignment, Stone told Haggerty he has a criminal record in Florida, Virginia and North Carolina.
Those prior arrests between 1993 and 2007 include charges of larceny, assault and aggravated battery and burglary.
He also was charged in 1998 with murder in Halifax County, Va.; that charge, however, was later dismissed by prosecutors.
