John Wesley Stitt

John Wesley Stitt, formerly of Patterson Township, Beaver Falls, died Sunday, April 18, in the Valley Care Nursing Home at the Masonic Village in Sewickley.

He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Seward, Westmoreland County, the son of the late Rev. Oscar and Sarah Stitt.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and businessman.

He was a member and past president of the New Brighton Rotary Club, the First United Methodist Church of New Brighton, the Merrick Art Gallery Associates and the Medley Club.

He was the owner of the J.W. Stitt Furniture Store in New Brighton for 44 years.

An Army veteran (master sergeant) of World War II, he served in the European theater attached to the 467th Quarter Master Co., part of the 3rd Army. Before going to the European theater, he was selected to attend an Adjutant Generals School at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. While in Europe, he was the recipient of the Bronze Star for valor during the Battle of the Bulge and received a direct commission as a lieutenant.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia, to whom he was married for 64 years; a daughter, Susan and her husband, Dr. Morry Moskovitz of Patterson Township, Beaver Falls, and a daughter, Sarah "Sally" Stitt of Brownsville; and two granddaughters, Brittany and Courtney Moskovitz. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Wesley was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Honse and Mary Jane Baker; and two brothers, Paul H. and Harry S. Stitt.
