Bernice Pauline Thompson Zahniser, 93, formerly of New Wilmington, Mercer, Butler and Volant, passed away Sunday at the Center Ridge Health Campus in North Ridgeville, Ohio,

Born in Volant, March 11, 1917, she was the daughter of Lester LeRoy Litzenberg and Daisy Margaret Cooper Litzenberg.

She was a graduate of New Wilmington High School.

She married Raymond "Skinny" Wellwood Thompson on Oct. 26, 1938, and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1996. She later married William F. Zahniser on Nov. 8, 1997; and he preceded her in death on July 17, 2006.

Always a loving homemaker, she also had worked for the Marett Carpet Co. in Volant as well as for the Tavern and for Dr. and Mrs. Russell in New Wilmington.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister who enjoyed gardening, sewing and taking care of friends and extended family.

She was a member of the New Covenant Presbyterian Church of New Castle.

Left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Patricia Alein Thompson and her husband, James, of Elora, Ohio; two grandsons, Jeffrey Thompson and Douglas Thompson and his wife, Elise; two sisters, Turza Marett and Doris Stock and her husband, Harry; several sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, infant Charlotte and Edna Litzenberg and Hazel Miller; and brothers, Robert, Earl William, Thomas and Gerald.

<B>Zahniser</B> — Friends of Bernice Pauline Thompson Zahniser, who died Sunday, May 30, 2010, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and also from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Friday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, Village of Leesburg, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant. The Rev. George Yates, pastor of New Covenant Evangelical Church, will preside. Interment will follow in the Leesburg Cemetery.If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the New Covenant Evangelical Church, 1911 Harlansburg Road, New Castle, PA 16101.
