SLIPPERY ROCK — The third annual Patrick J. Madden Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be Oct. 2 at Slippery Rock Community Park.

The 9 a.m. race is for all ages and will support American Cancer Society research. Runners and walkers should arrive at 8 a.m. that day for registration.

The event will honor the memory of Madden, a former borough mayor, by bringing the community together in an effort to eradicate the disease.

Participants are encouraged to register for the run/walk by Sept. 15.

Late registration will run through the day of the race and will cost an additional $25.

To register via mail, print, complete and mail the form on the website to Jenny Cline, 4150 Hopewell Ave., Butler, PA 16001.

Checks can be made payable to Patrick J. Madden Memorial 5K.

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Slippery Rock University received a nod from the Princeton Review as "A Best in the Northeast" college for the third year in a row.SRU is one of 218 schools in the northeastern United States to receive the honor.And for the second consecutive year, The Chronicle of Higher Education named SRU to its list of premier higher education employers.SRU is one of 97 institutions to make the July list.To qualify, institutions had to be deemed exceptional in one of 12 categories that are considered core attributes of an ideal academic workplace.About 43,000 people at 275 campuses responded to the survey nationally.Colleges were categorized into three groups for the survey. SRU is in the medium-size group.

GROVE CITY — The Lyons Den Rescue will present its eighth annual Canine Carnival on Sept. 11 at Grove City Memorial Park.The carnival, which will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include a rabies clinic, pet show, adoption showcase, a Chinese auction, games and demonstrations from several dog activity groups. Lunch will be available to buy.The Hound Hike dog walk will start at 1 p.m.The Lyons Den Rescue was founded by Karie Lyons in 2001.
