Mary E. McKinnis
Mary Elizabeth McKinnis, 94, of the Oertel Care Center, Concordia Ministries, Cabot, passed away Saturday.
Mrs. McKinnis was born July 23, 1916, to the late William B. and Pearl E. Lindsey.
Mrs. McKinnis received her bachelor's degree in June 1934 from Slippery Rock State Teachers College and her master's from the University of Pittsburgh in 1935.
She began her 36-year teaching career at Prospect, then moved to Butler High School, where she taught Latin. Most of her career was spent teaching fourth grade at the Summit Elementary School. Mrs. McKinnis retired from teaching in 1984.
Mrs. McKinnis was a member of the Bartramian Audubon Society, a member of the Poetry Club, the Pennsylvania State Educators Association, the Retired Teachers' Club, and a former member of the Sing Hosanna Cantata Choir.
She was an active member of the Summit Presbyterian Church, always helping and encouraging family and others.
Mrs. McKinnis enjoyed music and traveling, including the Holy Land, Alaska and Hawaii.
Mrs. McKinnis is survived by three sons, David L. of Butler, William W. of Butler and John R. of North Washington; four grandchildren, Melissa, Jesse, Ann and Libby; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda.
Mary was married on Aug. 14, 1943, to Russell C. McKinnis, who passed away June 24, 1980. Mrs. McKinnis also was preceded in death by one brother and one niece.
