NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The trial of the accused killer of a former Slippery Rock woman and her two daughters was postponed until Wednesday, reportedly because the judge became ill over the weekend and had to be hospitalized, according to a report from the New Haven Register.

The trial is for Steven Hayes, one of two men accused of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, Hayley 17, and Michaela, 11, in 2007 during a home invasion.

The defendant came to court ill on Thursday, which led to a noon adjournment. There was no court on Friday because of the start of Yom Kippur.

The judge has told jurors that trial testimony could take three weeks to finish, with another four to six weeks of testimony if the jury convicts Hayes of the most serious of the charges and has to decide whether to invoke the death penalty.

Hawke-Petit attended elementary school in Slippery Rock before the family moved elsewhere in Pennsylvania. Her father and mother later returned and now live in Slippery Rock.
