Bernard A. Carbin
Bernard A. Carbin of Butler died peacefully Saturday evening on his 91st birthday at the VA Butler Healthcare surrounded by his family.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Oct. 2, 1919, one of 16 children of Frederick J. and Catherine Hornberger Carbin.
Four brothers, three sisters and two infant brothers are deceased.
Bernard had a strong sense of patriotism and proudly served his country for 21 years in the Army Air Corps during World War II and then in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired with the rank of chief master sergeant in 1964. He was an aircraft mechanic who often said the B-25 bomber was his favorite aircraft. He later worked on many other aircraft from the B-17 to the B-52 bombers.
Following his military service, Bernard worked at the former Pullman Standard plant in Butler for 15 years until the plant closed.
He was a total family man, who most loved being with his children and grandchildren. He was the family mechanic with the ability to understand and repair almost anything mechanical, and he loved tinkering in his garage. His hobbies included tending his vegetable garden, playing cards and solving jigsaw puzzles.
He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church in Butler.
His wife of 65 years, Madeline Maloney Carbin, survives him. They had married June 6, 1945.
Other family members are four children, Bernard A. Carbin Jr., and his wife Alice, Beverly (J. Vincent) Hanratty, Sharon (Joel) Tipton and Michelle (Jon) McKain, all of Butler; 10 grandchildren, Michael Hanratty, Christine Allison, Alicia Udovich, Ashley Carbin, Jason Tipton, Deanna Clemens, Bernard and Lisa Tipton, Danielle Orth and Sean McKain; five great-grandchildren, Sydney and Cameron Hanratty and Nolan, Brody and Becca Allison; a brother, Victor "Jim" (Mary) Carbin of Butler; and five sisters, Clara (Ed) Woodnett of Florida, and Bertha Green, Catherine Bergbichler, Helen Kriley and Mae Flemming, all of Butler.
<B>CARBIN</B> — Friends of Bernard A. Carbin, who died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. A family friend, the Rev. Dismas Young, O.F.M. Cap., will officiate. Interment, with full military honors provided by the Joint Ceremonial Honors Squad of American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora and VFW Post 249 of Butler, will follow at Calvary Cemetery.The St. Paul Catholic Women and Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at the church.Memorial donations may be made to the Butler County Unit of the American Cancer Society.Additional information can be found and condolence messages placed at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
