The first 700 series in Butler County was bowled by Charlie Michaels Sr. during the 1951-52 season at Penn Lanes. What was Michaels' score?
I received a great deal of response when I listed some of the odd records from the USBC in my last column. Here are some others that you might find interesting:• Bryan Alpert of California bowled a 299, 300, and 800 in the same season in 1997. What's so special about that? Alpert rolled those games while bowling right-handed, then did it again bowling left-handed!• You could always count on Henry Wilz of Wisconsin. Wilz holds the record for most years without a league absence, an astounding 45½ years from 1931-76. Rosetta Foshaug of Washington outlasted Wilz, though, by not missing a league match for 47 years from 1959-84• Stan Kodish of Ohio holds the record for most duplicate games in a row. Kodish rolled eight consecutive 202 games during the 1988 season Lawrence Buller of Texas rolled six consecutive 180 games at the ABC Tournament in Texas in 1992• Jim Hankemeyer, Leroy Bornhop and Randy Lightfoot had to buy the other two members of their team a beer after recording a LOW game of 278 each during league play in Missouri in 2002. The team recorded a 1,413 game.
It's hard to believe, but the Professional Bowlers Tour will be using instant replay this season. The league will use replays to check on whether or not a player goes over the foul line.It might also be used to determine whether or not a pinsetter knocks over pins. If a pinsetter knocks over pins, they must be respotted. One famous incident from the past had tournament director Kirk Von Krueger calling a foul on Parker Bohn during a 1999 tourney, negating a strike. The PBA uses the foul line and a foul judge to determine whether or not a player goes over the foul line.
• Armco C: Matt Fry 279 (761), Phil Loverick Jr. 279 game, Ron Henry 245 (716)• Troy-Alan League: Dan Manning 269 (739), Ed Michael 256 (692), Thad Fry 234 (658)• Butler County Traveling: Brian Marcellus 279 (1006 quad), Carl Ealy 256 (927), Eric Hagan 255 (905)• Coins League: Mary Schultheis 201 (542), Stacey George 556 series, Vicki Stevick 226 game.
Michaels rolled a 715 series, a record that stood until Tony Betty rolled a 735 during the 1955-56 season. A 700 series is commonplace now, but it once was quite an achievement.Ron Willison is the bowling columnist for the Butler Eagle.
