LOUISVILLE (Kent.) — Slippery Rock University senior Jen Harpp closed her collegiate cross country career by earning All-America honors, placing 15th at the NCAA Division II National championships Saturday at E.P. Sawyer Park.
The top 40 finishers earn All-America honors. Harpp covered the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21 minutes, 45.9 seconds. She placed 11th last season, the top two national finishes in SRU women's program history.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota hired Northern Illinois coach Jerry Kill on Sunday to take over its struggling football program. Kill went 23-16 and led the Huskies to bowls in all three of his seasons at the school.Northern Illinois went 10-3 this season, including a 34-23 victory at Minnesota. Minnesota went 3-9 and 2-8 in the Big Ten this year. Tim Brewster was fired in October after the team started 1-6.
BOULDER, Colo. — Jon Embree will be introduced as Colorado's new football coach Monday. Word got out late last week that Embree, the Washington Redskins' tight ends coach, was athletic director Mike Bohn's choice to replace Dan Hawkins, fired after going 19-39 in four-plus seasons.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Sweden's Maria Hjorth won the season-ending LPGA Tour Championship on Sunday, finishing with an even-par 72 for a one-stroke victory over South Korea's Amy Yang.Hjorth had a 5-under 283 total at Grand Cypress, the highest-winning score in relation to par all year except for Paula Creamer's 3-under victory in the U.S. Open at Oakmont.Yani Tseng became the first player from Taiwan to win the player of the year award, and South Korea's Na Yeon Choi won the money title and VareTrophy for the best scoring average.
NEW ORLEANS — Hornets owner George Shinn has agreed to sell the club to the NBA and the transaction could be completed within a couple days, according to a person familiar with the decision.
