Butler School District may float bond issue
BUTLER TWP — The Butler School District may float a bond issue to complete three major repairs, according to finance committee meeting minutes released Monday night at a school board meeting.
According to the minutes, the district must replace its telephone system, replace multiple roofs and repair parking lots and roads at its campuses.
Administrators agreed to gather information regarding a bond issue and a cost-exempt bank loan to compare them and to develop a plan for the projects. No cost estimates were released.
At its meeting, the board:
• Accepted the district audit for the 2009-10 school year. The firm, Root, Spitznas & Smiley of Erie, completed the audit and said it contained no problems.
• Approved a $1,500 membership for the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health. The district’s 950 employees receive medical and prescription insurance through the organization. Membership has saved the district $2.2 million on prescription medication and health insurance costs over the past three years, Catherine Rodgers, director of business services, said.
• Approved a waiver to provide the DeMolay access to the Center Avenue elementary school gym one night a week during December, January and February for volleyball and basketball practices. The DeMolay is an organization for young men aged 12 to 21 years old.
• Announced that the Golden Tornado Marching Band will play at the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., on Dec. 31. This is the band’s second time at the Fiesta Bowl.
During the public comment period, Ann LeMay of Butler told the board her sophomore daughter has received copies of books to read for her honors English class rather than the books themselves.
Michael Strutt, assistant superintendent, secondary, told LeMay he would talk with her daughter’s school principal as well as the department chair to rectify the situation.
