Joseph R. Checkan, 74, of Sandy Lake, formerly of Forward Township., died Tuesday at his home.

Born June 2, 1936, in Forward Township., he was the son of the late Frank and Frances (Perlisk) Checkan.

Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was a former foreman with Bish Construction in its pipeline division, a former employee of Allison Park Construction, and he retired from Local 1058 laborers union.

In addition, Joe was a former member of the Harmony Moose, the Evans City VFW and the Hungarian Beneficial Society.

For many years, Joe and his wife, Jean, owned and operated Jean's Tavern in Forward Township.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Edith “Jean” (Gahagan) Checkan, who he married on Feb. 15, 1964; two daughters, Norma J. Hartman of Portersville and Janet Cindrich and her husband, Charley, of Arizona; a son, Gary L. Weaver and his wife, Sherry, of Zelienople; a sister, Patsy Jurista and her husband, Harold, of Butler; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and a grandchild.

<B>CHECKAN</B> — Friends of Joseph R. Checkan, who died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at <B>Boylan Funeral Home</B>, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ralph Fogal officiating.
