Alverta L. “Toe” Steighner, 83, of Herman died Monday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 28, 1927, in Butler, a daughter of the late Thurman and Martha Gallagher Shields.

Alverta was a homemaker, mother and grandmother, and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman. She was also a member and former president of the Herman Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

She was also an avid Steelers fan.

Her husband, Regis C. “Rege” Steighner, who she married May 29, 1946, preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1997.

She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Steighner and his wife, Susan, of West Sunbury, and Bruce Steighner and his wife, Mary, of Tennessee; two daughters, Sandra Miller and her husband, Frank, of Herman, and Debbie Barkley and her husband, Joseph, of Butler; two sisters, Georgene and her husband, Dan, and Babe and her husband, Dee; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Regis C. “Regie” Steighner Jr.; three brothers; and three sisters.

<B>STEIGHNER</B> — Friends of Alverta L. “Toe” Steighner, who died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. in Butler from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.Cremation services are provided by the funeral home. Her ashes will be buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Herman.
