PITTSBURGH — Steelers safety Troy Polamalu practiced for the first time in three weeks Friday, leaving his status for Pittsburgh's game in Cleveland uncertain.

Polamalu has missed the last two games with a right Achilles' tendon injury. The team's medical staff wants to see how he responds to Friday's practice before deciding whether he can play Sunday.

Polamalu was selected this week by his teammates as the Steelers' most valuable player, the first time in his career he was chosen. He also was picked for his sixth Pro Bowl.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers formally announced Friday coach John Fox won't return next season, ending a nine-year run in which he led the franchise to its only Super Bowl appearance.His departure has been no secret, and Fox said after his final full practice that he'd been preparing for it for two years.Fox, 78-73 with Carolina, will coach his final game Sunday at Atlanta.

NEW YORK — The NFL reduced the fines for Atlanta's Dunta Robinson and New England's Brandon Meriweather Friday, both cited for flagrant hits against defenseless receivers.Robinson's fine was reduced by appeals officer Ted Cottrell, from $50,000 to $25,000. Meriweather's went from $50,000 to $40,000. Robinson's hit on Philadelphia wide receiver DeSean Jackson left both with concussions, and Meriweather picked up a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness after hitting Baltimore tight end Todd Heap in the head.

San Francisco won the bidding to host the 2013 America’s Cup, to be sailed in fast catamarans with a backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Coit Tower.The announcement by the America’s Cup Event Authority came after talks with San Francisco and Newport, R.I.
