Winter Wonderland

Moraine, McConnells Mill offer plenty of outdoor fun

Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks will host the following winter events:

• Survive the snow winter hike, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the South Shore office. Participants will learn basic outdoor survival skills while hiking. If there is ample snow, a limited number of snowshoes may be available for use, or participants may take their own.

Dress for the weather, and, if desired, take a favorite survival gadget for show-and-tell. This event is part of the 16th annual Winter Trails Day. Call 724-368-3612, or visit www.wintertrails.org/index.php.

• Moraine Winterfest, 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 22 at McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore.

Admission is free and so are the activities, which include a snow shoe workshop, family winter nature hike, ice skating (ice permitting/take own skates), children’s crafts and snow activities, dog sled team, cross country skiing with participants own skies, and music by Tom Panei.

A chili cookoff with a fee of $1 to taste or $3 per bowl is planned. Proceeds benefit the Moraine Preservation Fund. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. Winners will be selected by the attendees.

For more information, visit the website http://morainepreservationfund.org.

• Beauty of winter hike, 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at McConnells Mill State Park.

Meet at Kildoo Picnic Area.

The moderate guided hike distance will be weather dependent, but those participating should dress for the weather and wear very sturdy shoes. It would be helpful to take binoculars, a walking stick and a camera. Call 724-368-3612.
