Paul C. Smith
Paul C. Smith, 83, of McGrady Hollow Road, Butler, died Saturday at the Butler VNA Inpatient Hospice.
He was born April 30, 1927, in Butler, a son of the late Herman H. and Mildred Cramer Smith.
Paul was a 1951 graduate of Indiana (Pa.) University and earned his degree in secondary education. While in college, he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and also was a member of the varsity wrestling team.
During World War II, Paul served in the U.S. Marines Corps. He was a member of the Marine Corps Detachment and the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora.
Paul was a retired dairy farmer and had worked at the Armco Steel Corp. from 1969 until retiring from there in 1992.
He was a member and past president of the Butler County Holstein Club. He also was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and a lifetime member of the National Holstein Association.
He greatly enjoyed hunting and outdoor sports and was a charter member of the Happy Hunters Sportsmen's Club. Paul also was a member of the NRA and the Butler Moose Lodge 64.
Paul was an active member of the St. Wendelin Roman Catholic, Carbon Center. He was a member of the parish council for many terms and a member of the church choir. He also was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Wendelin's.
His wife, Stella M. Zabo Smith, who he married June 25, 1955, at Holy Cross Church in Jerome, Somerset County, survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Paul G. “Jerry” Smith of Orem, Utah, and Donald R. Smith of Medina, Ohio; four daughters, Sister Donna Smith, S.H.S. at the Sisters of the Holy Spirit Motherhouse in Westview, Mary Beth Bonomo and her husband, Jamie Bonomo, of Sewickley, Joan Smith-Myer of Grove City and Paula J. Smith-Hartley and her husband, Gene Hartley, of Newtown; 15 grandchildren; a brother, Richard Smith, and his wife, Barbara, of Gibsonia; and a sister, Joan Gumpper, and her husband, John, of Butler.
He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
<B>SMITH </B>— Friends of Paul C. Smith, who died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Dec. 18, at the St. Wendelin Catholic Church, 210 St. Wendelin Road, Carbon Center. His pastor, the Rev. Steven V. Neff, will officiate.
