SRU hires new chief of police

Michael Simmons
Simmons also named director

SLIPPERY ROCK — After a five-month search, Slippery Rock University has a new chief of police.

Michael Simmons, formerly the director of safety and security at the Community College of Allegheny County, has been named director and chief.

Simmons began his duties Monday. He could not be reached for comment.

University President Robert Smith said Simmons’ local experience made him an obvious choice.

“He’s very familiar with Western Pennsylvania, he knows law enforcement and he’s respected by law enforcement officers in the area,” Smith said.

Interim Chief Windy Stafford will continue as the assistant chief, the position she held previously.

“We’re thrilled that Windy is staying with us in that role,” Smith said.

Smith said Simmons plans on “community policing,” and increasing friendly interaction between students and officers.

“We want that for our campus. We want our officers to be engaged with our students,” Smith said.

He earned a master’s degree in administration of criminal justice from Point Park University in 2010 and a bachelor of science in law enforcement from Point Park in 2004.

He joined CCAC in April 2009. Before joining CCAC, Simmons served as the chief for the Titusville Police Department from October 2005 to March 2009. From January 2000 to October 2005, he was a detective with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police in the Internal Affairs Department. He earned six commendations, including the Meritorious Service Award.

The 20-member SRU Police Department oversees security for the 610-acre campus as well as off-campus facilities, including the Old Stone House.

Former Chief Robert Downey became the police chief at California University of Pennsylvania in August.
