SR artist exhibits in Maryland

“Worlds Apart” by Rhoda Taylor of Slippery Rock.

FREDERICK, Md. — The Blanche Ames Gallery is featuring the work by fiber artist Rhoda Taylor of Slippery Rock during February.

Taylor has shown her fiber art from California to Michigan to Ohio, and most extensively in Pennsylvania. When Taylor retired in 2002 from her career as a university biology professor, she found a life-long familiarity with fiber and fabrics influenced her entry into artistic expression.

She began making quilted wall hangings, and with some experience, joined the Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh in 2007.

Soon after, she began making her own fabrics and designing her own art. She produces mixed media works on fabric and paper that she embellishes with rusting, stamping, painting, fusing, branding, beads and yarns.

Taylor's fiber artworks have earned her entry to at least 23 juried exhibits and won her several prizes. She also exhibits in nonjudged shows.

A member of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists and the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, she sells some works through the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle.

An opening reception with the artist is planned for 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the gallery in Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Road.
