Butler man dies after he's found hanging in cell

GASTONIA, N.C. — A Butler man with a history of drug trafficking apparently hanged himself at a jail in southwestern North Carolina.

Daniel Michael Summerville, 25, died Tuesday about 10 hours after he was found hanging in his cell, said Gaston County Jail officials.

Summerville was unconscious and not breathing when guards found him at 7:30 p.m. Monday, authorities said. Paramedics revived him.

He was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating his death. Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger said his office is conducting its own investigation.

Summerville was booked into the Gaston County Jail shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday after Mount Holly police arrested him on a felony charge of financial identification fraud, according to jail documents and a police official.

Cloninger did not know for certain why he was in their county.

But Cloninger acknowledged that his office this week spoke to a North Carolina woman who claimed to be Summerville’s fiancee.

Law enforcement authorities in Butler County, knew Summerville. He had spent time in and out of state and county prisons, mainly for drug cases.

At the time of his death, he was the target of an investigation involving heroin, said Pat Cannon, who heads the Butler County Drug Task Force.
