Mars sophomore swimmer wins WPIAL butterfly title, breaks speed record
PITTSBURGH — Maggie Gruber of Mars High School grabbed one WPIAL swimming championship Thursday and goes for another one today.
The sophomore rewrote history by swimming the Class AA girls 100-yard butterfly in 54.63 seconds, breaking the previous mark by more than a second.
Gruber entered the event with the fastest time in the state.
Today she swims in the 100-yard backstroke, where she also is seated first in the WPIAL and in the state.
The WPIAL swimming championships are at Pitt’s Trees Pool.
“I felt the pressure,” she admitted. “But I’ve received a lot of support from my teammates. I try to improve in every practice and every meet.”
