Massive heart attack kills man, leads to crash
BUTLER TWP — A massive heart attack killed a Bruin man whose pickup truck moments later crashed into a PNC Bank drive-thru in the Butler Commons shopping center Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
“He was dead before he hit the bank,” Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr said of 50-year-old Joseph Brewer.
Witnesses reported seeing the pickup truck driven by Brewer traveling erratically just before 2 p.m. while eastbound on Route 356 near Hindman Road.
The pickup left its travel lane and veered up the embankment of the south berm, hitting two traffic signs and continuing onto the lawn of the VA Butler Healthcare facility, Butler Township polices said.
The truck struck a utility pole’s guide wire before returning to the road and crossing all four lanes, traveling into the Chili’s Restaurant in the shopping plaza.
The runaway vehicle stopped only when it crashed into two posts that support the drive-thru roof at the PNC branch.
“At that time of day and with that amount of traffic, it’s extremely fortunate no one was hit and no one else hurt,” said Butler Township Police Chief Gary Garman.
