SRU attracts big names to Performing Arts Series

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Flying Karamazov Brothers, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame, the best of holiday Broadway and Tap Kids make up the shows of Slippery Rock University's 2011-12 Performing Arts Series.

Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium. Parking is free.

The schedule is:

• Flying Karamazov Brothers, Sept. 9, offers 100 minutes of spectacle through juggling, music, comedy dance and theater. The brothers will do their trademark juggling using items supplied by the audience as part of their vaudeville-type act.

• Peter Yarrow, folk musician, on Oct. 28, narrates his life as a musician and social activist singing iconic songs from his days with the legendary trio Peter, Paul and Mary. The audience is expected to sing along with such hits as “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer” and “Blowin' in the Wind.”

• “Neil Berg's Broadway Holiday,” Dec. 2, offers a cast of singers who have performed in a host of Broadway musicals performing selections from their signature shows as well as holiday favorites.

• Tap Kids, March 30, 2012 features eight rhythm tap dancers from around the nation. The production tells the story of a group of teenagers during their last months at school as they come to terms with their love, the first big dance and their pending adulthood.

This is the seventh year the SRU series has been offered.Season tickets are available. They are $76 for adults, $68 for senior citizens age 62 and older, $66 for youths age 17 and younger, and $28 for SRU students. There is a $3 handling fee per order.Individual event tickets will be available for sale after season subscription sales conclude June 24.Additional travel excursions include:• Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's PNC Pops concert “Ballroom with a Twist” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave. Marvin Hamlisch will conduct. Tickets with transportation in the dress circle are $105; in the family circle are $65 or for gallery seating are $45 for students. Tickets without transportation are $15 less. A dessert reception for SRU participants will follow the concert.• An excursion to “Billy Elliot,” a celebration of one young boy's triumph against the odds, is planned for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12, 2012 at the Benedum Center, 719 Liberty Ave.The event includes a box dinner served on the bus. Tickets, including transportation and dinner, are $67 for first-tier seats and $45 for second-tier seats available only to students.All tickets may be ordered by calling 724-738-2018.
