Woman seeks 1 day for trash burning
MIDDLESEX TWP — A resident of the Dwellington housing plan asked supervisors to limit trash burning so she and her family can enjoy their property.
Katrina Pyo of Dwellington Drive asked supervisors at their Wednesday night meeting to consider enacting an ordinance that limits trash burning to one day per week.
Pyo said certain neighbors burn their trash at random times, and her family must go inside to avoid the smoke.
“We’ve been chased inside because it’s sunny out and people burn (their trash),” she said.
She said after a stretch of rainy weather, the odor of burning trash fills the neighborhood.
Pyo, who is a nurse, said she brings her family indoors and closes the windows when one or more neighbors begin burning trash because the smoke can cause pulmonary problems or a flare-up of asthma or migraine headaches.
She said the neighbors she has approached in the plan, where many lots are one-quarter of an acre, tell her to “call the cops” if she has a complaint about their trash burning.
But since the only ordinance in place prohibits burning on Sundays and holidays, Pyo said she has no recourse.
“It happens at any hour of any day,” Pyo said.
She told supervisors she is not recommending bonfires or outdoor wood burners be banned or limited in the township, but she would like to see an ordinance limiting the burning of trash to one specific day and time per week.
