Edward T. Smietana, 88, of Butler died Monday evening at Butler Memorial Hospital following a two-week illness with pneumonia.

He was born in Lyndora, April 8, 1923, a son of Teofil and Victoria Rawansky Smietana.

He retired from the silicon department of the Butler plant of the Armco Steel Corp. on Dec. 10, 1983, after 34 years. He also had worked at Pullman Standard before serving in World War II. For more than 30 years, he had worked with his brother, “Plumber Joe” Smietana.

He had been a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Lyndora American Legion Post 778 and the VFW Post 249 in Butler.

He also was a member of the Highfield Community Center and the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church at the Lyndora worship site, formerly the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Eva Sobieraj Smietana, who he married Nov. 21, 1944; four children and their spouses, Edward T. (Ginger) Smietana Jr. of Paw Paw, Mich., Dennis (Linda) Smietana of Butler, Patricia (Robert) Steere of Butler and Christine (Robert) Craig of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Smietana, and a sister, Mary Kucer.

<B>SMIETANA</B> — Friends of Edward T. Smietana, who died Monday, April 18, 2011, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. George Palick of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church will officiate. Entombment will follow at the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum at Butler County Memorial Park with military honors provided by the Joint Ceremonial Squad of the VFW Post 249 of Butler and the Michael Kosar Post 778 American Legion, Lyndora.The Bereavement Committee of St. Fidelis Parish will conduct the parish vigil service at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
