BUTLER TWP — AK Steel Corp. could face as much as $206,000 in fines for alleged record-keeping violations regarding safety hazards at the Butler Works facility.

The bulk of the fines being proposed by The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration — $200,000 — are related to four instances where AK Steel allegedly failed to record incidents that could pose hazards to workers’ hearing between 2007-2010.

The remaining $6,000 in proposed fines are based on the company’s alleged failure to properly record other work-related injuries and illnesses occurring in 2007, 2009 and 2010. These violations are deemed “other-than-serious.”

AK Steel, which received the citations June 1, has 15 business days from then to comply, request an informal conference or contest the citations.

As of today, the company had not responded, Hawkins said.

Alan McKoy, spokesman for AK Steel, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
