McCaslin joining Point Park
Tony Grenek has always had appreciation for the type of basketball Maura McCaslin has played.
So, entering his first season as the women’s basketball coach at Point Park University, it made sense to have her aboard.
McCaslin, who starred at Moniteau High School, then at Pitt-Titusville the last two seasons, will be moving on to play for the Pioneers.
“I’ve followed Maura’s career at Moniteau and I asked her old AAU coach what’s she doing after Titusville,” said Grenek. “She was set on going to Pitt-Bradford her last two years.
“I asked her if she’d like to come down to Point Park and her parents came down for a visit. She gave it a week to mull it over. She changed her mind and I’m excited she did,” he added.
“I went down to look at the campus,” said McCaslin, a 5-foot-8 point guard. “I liked what I saw at (Titusville), the area was like the country I was used to, but I was excited to go to the city.”
McCaslin was a four-year starter at Moniteau who averaged 12.9 points, four assists and four rebounds her junior year, 14 points her senior year and combined to nail 59 3-pointers before moving on to Titusville for the 2009-10 season.
In her second year at Titusville, McCaslin averaged 6.2 assists and 2.54 steals per game, which ranked her second and 20th nationally in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
Both McCaslin and Grenek appear to like the same brand of basketball, which should make this a seamless transition.
“He likes the run-and-gun style and that’s the way I like to play,” said McCaslin. “To be able to bring a no-turnover play and to be aggressive, that’s the way I like to play.”
Said Grenek, “I love her mindset for the game, a guard who doesn’t make many mistakes and gets her team involved in the offense.
“She led the conference in assists. She’s a player I know won’t turn the ball over in crucial situations. She’s tough as nails and she’s able to guard anyone defensively,” Grenek added.
McCaslin — who will major in secondary education-mathematics — will be joined at Point Park by Butler High School graduate Katresa Savisky, who left BC3 after one season, and possibly by Karns City grad Ashley Campbell, who spent the past two seasons at BC3.
Campbell, however, came to Point Park for volleyball, but may try her hand at basketball following the season.
“I think that would be really nice,” said McCaslin. “I’ve played with both Ashley and Katresa and knowing each other should help defensively on the court.”
