Ernestine Mercer Kobrick
Ernestine Mercer Kobrick, 88, of Adams Township, formerly of New York City and West Hollywood, Calif., died Friday morning at Worthington at Adams.
Born in Amarillo, Texas, March 25, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Acy Hunter and Mary Loretta Jinkins Suiter.
Ernestine was a graduate of the Juliard School of Music in New York, where she had a voice scholarship and became involved in Vaudeville.
She started her career as a Broadway singer and actress. She was the star attraction at the Latin Quarter, New York; the Desert Inn, Dunes, Las Vegas; San Soucci, Miami Beach; Moulin Rouge, Hollywood; Chez Paris, Chicago; Golden Gate Theatre, San Francisco; and the Riverside Hotel, Reno.
In theater, she starred in “Handy-Dandy” as Molly Egan; “Gypsy Rose” as Rose; “Boy on a Straight Back Chair” as Ray; “No No Nanette” as Pauline and “Funny Girl” as Mrs. Strakosh.
In 1981, she moved to Hollywood and began an acting career that included guest appearances on television, including roles on “E.R.,” “Drew Carey,” “Lois and Clark,” “Alien Nation,” “True Colors,” “Remington Steele,” “Benson,” “The Jeffersons,” “Santa Barbara,” “Starman,” “The Judge,” “Yellow Rose,” “General Hospital,” “Oh, Madeline,” “Punky Brewster,” “Texas,” “Glitter,” “The Spirit” and “Seventh Heaven.” She had a five-year recurring role as Mildred Johnson on “The Young and the Restless.”
Her career also included movie appearances in “Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag,” “Casper,” “Things To Do in Denver When Your Dead,” “Eight Days a Week,” “The Sleeping Car,” “Jezebel's Kiss” and “Gideon.”
She had performed with legendary actors Charlton Heston, Shelley Winters, Shirley Jones, Harvey Korman and Carroll O'Connor. She retired in 2000.
Ernestine was married to Gustav Mitchell from 1948 until 1968 and to Leonard Kobrick from 1968 until 1973.
Surviving are two nephews, George Mitchell (Janet) and Nick Mitchell, Jr., both of Mars, and other distant relatives.
