Judge John Harold Brydon

Judge John Harold Brydon, 81, of West Melbourne, Brevard County, Fla., formerly of Fort Myers, Fla., Butler, Center Township and Slippery Rock, passed away Saturday at his home in West Melbourne.

Born in Grove City, Mercer County, April 13, 1930, he was the son of Harold Ralph Brydon and Olive Pearl Carothers Brydon.

He married Norma Dee McCandless on Dec. 25, 1952.

Mr. Brydon was a Protestant and a former member of the Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.

He graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1948 and attended the Valley Forge Military Academy from 1948 to 1949. He then attended Allegheny College in Meadville from 1949 until 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and then attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1958.

Judge Brydon practiced law in Slippery Rock and Butler from 1959 until 1982 and served as district attorney for Butler County from 1964 to 1982. He then served as common pleas judge for Butler County from 1982 until 2005.

Judge Brydon was a member of the Grove City F&AM Lodge 603, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle, the Butler Elks, the Butler Moose, Butler Cubs athletic club, the Slippery Rock American Legion and the Fort Myers VFW.

He was a former member of the Butler YMCA and served for two terms on the Slippery Rock School Board. While there, he was very instrumental in initiating the boys football program at Slippery Rock High School in 1959.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Dee Brydon of their home in West Melbourne, Fla.; two daughters, Karin A. and her husband, Robert Lytle, of Hagerstown, Md., and Yvonne “Vonnie” S. Brydon of West Melbourne, Fla.; a son Harold R. Brydon and his wife, Susan, of Butler; a brother, George Samuel Brydon and his wife, Nellie, of Slippery Rock; four grandchildren, John Lytle, Andrew Lytle, Michaela S. Brydon and John H. Brydon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Opitz

<B>BRYDON </B>— Funeral services for Judge John Harold Brydon, who died Saturday, May 28, 2011, will be at the Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St., Slippery Rock, at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, with the Rev. William Mumaw, pastor of the Center Presbyterian Church and Chaplain, Maj. Gen. Donald J. Harlin, retired chief of chaplains, U.S. States Air Force and brother-in-law of Judge Brydon, presiding.Friends will be received at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, Friday from noon to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the Center Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. An interment committal service with full military honors will follow in Slippery Rock Cemetery, Slippery Rock Township.A Masonic service will be observed at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
