Margaret L. Karnes
Margaret L. “Peg” Karnes, 89, of Butler, formerly of Eau Claire, passed away Thursday evening at the Parker Personal Care Home in Parker.
Born in Argentine, Pa., on July 4, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Meals Thompson. With her mother passing away when Peg was 16 months old, she was reared by her grandparents, Edward and Amelia Thompson.
Baptized in the former Argentine United Methodist Church, she was a member there until joining the Bethel United Methodist Church in Eau Claire in 1940. Presently, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Butler.
At the Eau Claire church, she sang in the church choir, chaired the worship committee, served on church council, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She graduated from the former Concord High School at Hooker in 1939.
Peg was long active in the Eau Claire community at the church, with parades and little league events, and served many years as Republican committee woman for the borough. She also served the borough as judge of elections from 1959 to 1981.
She is survived by one son, John E. “Jack” Karnes and his wife, Judy, of Six Points; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Button” Karnes, who she married Oct. 25, 1940, and who died Dec. 20, 1989; and by one daughter, Linda Karnes Passauer.
