MARION TWP — The home at 172 Watson Road was reduced to ash Saturday morning by a fire apparently sparked by a candle.

One of the residents of the double-wide mobile home was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with burns on his hands, arms, head and back. A dog perished in the blaze.

The fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m., said Mark Eberlein, who lived in the trailer with his brother, Joey.

Joey Eberlein was listed in stable condition this morning at Mercy Hospital.

Eberlein said Friday’s storms knocked out electricity and that, after lighting a candle, he fell asleep.

“My brother woke me up as soon as it went up,” Eberlein said.

“There was nothing I could do. The thing I feel worst about is my dog.”

Eberlein said he had no insurance for the trailer and it was a total loss. The fire claimed all of his belongings, including his electrician tools.

“That was everything I had in there,” he said.

The American Red Cross in Butler County, Eberlein said, has provided him with food and clothing vouchers to get him through the weekend, in addition to offering him lodging during that time.

Fire departments from Marion Township, Harrisville and Slippery Rock were among those that responded to the call.
