Cause of fire in mobile home investigated
SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — State police are investigating a fire early this morning that destroyed a double-wide mobile home.
A woman and a 14-year-old boy were at the home on Leesburg Station Road but they got out unhurt, authorities said.
The woman, whose husband was at work, was sleeping shortly before 1 a.m. when she heard the smoke detector and her dogs barking. She got up and found the fire in the bedroom the boy uses.
The teen has been staying with the couple while his father, who lives in Oklahoma, works in Pennsylvania, said Cpl. Jeff Crede, state police fire marshal. The couple and boy’s father are friends.
The woman, whose name was not available, awoke and checked the boy’s bedroom, where she found the curtains on fire.
She checked the bed but could not find the boy, Crede said. The fire eventually chased her from the house. Once outside, she noticed a gate open and assumed the boy had gotten out.
She later learned he had gone to a neighbor’s house to get help.
The home is considered a total loss.
Crede estimated damage at $100,000 to the structure and contents. The property is insured.
Representatives of the American Red Cross are assisting the family with emergency needs such as food and shelter.
Assisting the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department were firefighters from Pine Township, Grove City, Volant and East End Mercer.
