Elderly woman dies from burns

ADAMS TWP — An elderly woman who was severely burned while cutting grass has died.

Josephine Brockman, 91, suffered third degree burns over 80 percent of her body on Wednesday afternoon when her riding lawn mower overturned and caught on fire.

Township Police Chief Bill Westerman said on Thursday that according to a police report, a neighbor of Brockman’s on Church Street heard a loud pop, which he ignored.

The report said the man went outside a few minutes later and saw fire and smoke coming from the yard just off Brockman’s porch.

The man said he ran to Brockman’s house to find her pinned under the burning mower. After another neighbor knocked back the flames with a fire extinguisher, the man pulled Brockman from under the machine and called 911.

Westerman said neighbors told officers that Brockman had lived alone since her husband died a few years ago.

The report said Brockman suffered burns to her face, torso and extremities.

Westerman said the loud popping noise has not been identified and no one saw the accident, so the sequence of events will likely remain undetermined.

Brockman was flown to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she died Wednesday night.
