Pauline 'Polly' M. Black
Pauline "Polly" M. Black, 88, of Butler passed away Monday afternoon at Concordia Good Samaritan Hospice after a brief illness.
The daughter of the late John W.P. Mitchell and Sarah Christiana Simpson Mitchell, Polly was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Gates County, N.C.
She was a member of the Nixon United Methodist Church in Penn Township.
Polly graduated from the East Carolina Teachers' College and taught high school chemistry in North Carolina.
During World War II, she worked at the Pentagon as a cryptologist for the Signal Corps.
She was instrumental in the creation of kindergarten classes in the Butler School District in the late 1950s.
Polly participated in the Intermediate League as chairwoman of the antique show and volunteered with both the hospital auxiliary and at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
After raising her children, Polly worked as an office assistant to Dr. Ernest E. Moore in Butler.
One of Polly's greatest interests was duplicate bridge at which she succeeded in becoming a life master. She loved spending time with her family, playing Scrabble and helping her neighbors at The Orchard.
Polly is survived by her three children, Susan (David) Campbell of Maketu, New Zealand, Christine (Earl) Taylor of Butler and Arthur (Janet) Black III of Renfrew; and four grandchildren, Dylan (Amey Hutchins) Steinberg of Philadelphia, Joshua Taylor of Butler, Erin Black of Gallup, N.M., and Arthur Black IV of Bloomington, Ind.; and a great-grandson, Ian Campbell of California. She also is survived by one brother, William P. Mitchell, and by many nieces and nephews.
Polly was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mildred Rountree and Doris Weaver.
<B>BLACK</B> — Friends of Pauline "Polly" M. Black, who died Monday, July 18, 2011, will be received from 2 to 4 and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St., Butler. The funeral service will immediately follow at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Bruce Merritt of the Nixon United Methodist Church officiating.
